Stone, Oak, And Textured Neutrals Come Together In A Park Shore Residence That Balances Functionality And Style

“EACH CLIENT HAS THEIR own reason for why they move down to Florida,” remarks designer Sally Richardson. The most common? To experience a more casual approach to living. The temperate, sunshine-filled winters and welcoming neighbors don’t hurt either. For a couple with three grown sons, escaping the seasonal chill of Michigan meant finding their own calm, coastal retreat in Naples. Their home, designed by local architecture firm JMDG and builder Parker Borelli, encapsulates the lofty, single-level living Floridians are accustomed to with a pool, gracious year-round spaces, and thoughtful design that balances togetherness with quiet respite.

Richardson has worked in the upscale Park Shore neighborhood for more than 20 years and was hired in June 2023 to guide the owners to further define their style, as well as curate cohesion among furniture, light fixtures, countertops, and more. “I wanted a clean, calm aesthetic ... Sally brought this vision to life in so many ways,” says the homeowner. The neighborhood, approximately a mile from the beach, is often bustling with bikers and has a strong community spirit despite its growth over the decades, notes the designer.

From the beginning, Richardson focused on creating a warm, approachable backdrop defined by clean lines, intentional color, and natural textures. At 4,145 square feet, the three-bedroom residence also includes a den, home office, and outdoor kitchen, ensuring flexible space for family gatherings and breezy indoor-outdoor living. Oak tones, layered textiles, and a refined, coastal- inspired palette run throughout, offering cohesion while allowing each room to carry its own personality. The homeowners lean toward transitional design moments. Think timeless lines, organic materials, and elevated touches. As Richardson puts it: “The house offers a classic foundation with subtle touches of contemporary and coastal styles, while the overall aesthetic is easy and relaxed.”

The design team set the residence’s tone upon entry with a teak driftwood console and double-ring LED fixture from Visual Comfort to accentuate the foyer’s 18-foot-tall ceilings. Black accents nod to the home’s double iron doors and provide a striking counterpoint to crisp white millwork. The open-concept great room, anchored with structured yet comfortable seating from Kravet, has sweeping outdoor views as well as an intentional connection to the kitchen, navy bar, and dining room.

BELOW: When it comes to decorating a foyer, Richardson likes to “have a grounding piece of furniture that creates immediate interest.” Here, said piece is a wooden console by Ibolili crafted from bonded teak driftwood.

BELOW: Like with other rooms in the home, the design team took the opportunity to infuse as much texture as possible in the primary bedroom. Richardson describes the rope bed from Bernhardt as “a contemporary nod to nature and palms.”

BELOW: The Cowtan & Tout Plymouth wallcovering, made of hemp grass-cloth, immediately catches the eye upon entering the guest room. The design approach here doesn’t take risks: “It’s for visitors, so it has to appeal to multiple people versus a specific person,” says Richardson.

The outdoor kitchen is a welcoming area for friends and family to gather, designed with a beachy quartzite backsplash and cabinetry made of cypress, a species chosen for its durability in humid climates. The spa-like primary bathroom, which features his-and-hers vanities, Calacatta Gold marble, and a serene oval tub, is awash in neutrals yet elevated through textured bedding—a continuation of the calm approach to design seen throughout the house.

From the serenity of the den to the family-focused outdoor kitchen, the home reflects both function and feeling. “I’ve gotten so many compliments,” says the homeowner. “People say it feels clean and modern but with lots of fun design features incorporated throughout. We love every corner of it.”

After a Michigan couple purchased a home in Naples’ Park Shore neighborhood to escape their frigid winters, they took a chance on designer Sally Richardson to create their ideal Florida retreat.
